Exciting news............we have our first affiliated instructor!!

A big Congratulations to Patsy, who put in a huge effort during her stay with us. Patsy is doing a great job with her horsemanship and we are really proud to have her affiliated with us. She has a very loyal and committed group of students in South Africa, and they are all working at a pretty high level, so she is already doing a good job in that regard.

Mark

Mark is in the UK now, and sent an SMS saying he just did a demo at Hickstead! He thought he was doing a demo for a group of pony club students, so that would have been a bit of a surprise!

First Young Horse Course a Great Success!!

Our first Young Horse Course was a great success, with students doing a terrific job turning out quiet, well prepared horses. The lift in the standard of horsemanship was very impressive over the 6 week period, and everybody really applied themselves.

We had great feedback from students with regards to content, instruction, and course duration  (no one wanted it to end after the 6 weeks!).

Our next course starts on the 28th June, and we are taking enrolments now for that course.

We will be holding an Open Day for this second course on 17th July , being a Saturday for those that could not make it to the last mid week open day.

Try to get there if you can, as it was a great day for all involved.

For more info on the course, check out the web site at:

☺☺☺☺☺Are You Interested in Teaching, Now or in the Future?☺☺☺☺☺

There is some confusion surrounding Horsemanship Australia Affiliated Instructors, and how to become involved.

We have a list of horsemanship criteria, that you may or may not be able to achieve at this point. However, if you think you would be able to in the future, and are interested in becoming an affiliated instructor, please give us a call.

We would like those interested for now or for the future to come to the first week long instructors gathering, commencing 19th June. This will give you an idea of where we are heading with this, and also clarify what you will need to achieve with your own horsemanship.

There is no charge to attend, but in return, we ask that you arrange some teaching days for us.

Please contact Lisa if you would like more information on becoming an Affiliated Instructor, or attending the camp now and becoming an instructor in the future.

Please note that attendance at the camp plus satisfying all the horsemanship criteria is required to become an affiliated instructor.

Group Jumping Lessons

Regular group jumping lessons are back, and will be scheduled for Saturday mornings over winter, whilst the days are so short and cold.

Please give Lisa a call for dates and times, and to book in.

These lessons are designed to encourage and build confidence, so come along even if you don’t think you can do it! It will improve you balance and focus no end.

Parents and Kids Groups

If you are going to drag the kids pony all the way over for a lesson, you may as well bring your own mount!

Due to popular request, we are going to recommence the parent and kids group lessons, where both of you get to have a group lesson at the discounted family rate.

Bring some lunch and catch up with fellow parents and riders.

Once again, call Lisa to book in!

First day – 5th June 2004

March 2004

Mark

As you may have heard, Mark made an unplanned dismount from a young horse he was riding and injured his neck. He has had surgery and will be fine in time, but in the meantime, he is bossing the rest of us around from his throne, and it is business as usual at the centre.

We thank you for all the thoughts and good wishes that were sent our way.

Weanlings

We were fortunate enough to win two large contracts to handle weanlings for leading thoroughbred studs in the Hunter Valley, which resulted in us handling around 100 weanlings in three weeks. The timing of Mark’s unplanned dismount was impeccable, as the contracts started only a few days after he fell off!

Fortunately, the crack weanling handling team of Debbie, Lisa and Emma were able to pull off a terrific job with the assistance at various times from Ian Bruce, Mark’s brother John (JR), Keith (working student from Ireland) and Kerry Bell. Thanks to all our helpers!

The studs were a little uncertain when a team of girls arrived to do the work (having made the contract with a tall man in a cowboy hat) but were really happy with the outcome, and have realised that feel and timing are more important than muscle and testosterone when handling these little guys. We even had the farrier at the second stud trying to get us more work with his clients, because the horses we had handled stood perfectly to be shod, whilst the others were rather “dangerous”.

Go the girls!!!!(plus Ian, John and Keith)

Young Horse Course

The first Young Horse Training and Starting Course commences 8th March, and it is all systems go to get ready for it. We have a keen contingent of students, and a group of youngsters ready to go.

Due to the recent weanling handling contracts that we have completed, we have been able to arrange 6 days of weanling handling to form part of the Young Horse Handling and Starting course, to cover more areas of young horse training. This will be carried out in the Hunter Valley at two thoroughbred studs.

For those that are interested, each Wednesday night commencing 10th March for 6 weeks we are having a guest speaker, talking on a particular area relevant to the course. All are invited to attend after 7:30pm at no charge.

In addition, there will be an open day during the course on Thursday 25th March, from 10am until 4pm, for those that are keen to take a look. There is no charge for this day, but you must contact us if you are interested in attending. Please phone and leave a message on (02) 4575 3245.

Next course starts June 28th 2004. For more info, check out the web site

☺☺☺☺☺Instructors☺☺☺☺☺

Horsemanship Australia have decided to establish a program where those wishing to instruct can apply for affiliation with Horsemanship Australia. The benefits of affiliation for Instructors would be:

bullet

The opportunity to attend an Instructors Gathering once per year, to learn and discuss teaching techniques and work on their horsemanship

bullet

The opportunity to network with other instructors, discuss strategies, problems, approaches etc

bullet

Access to an evolving teaching strategy and approach, and the opportunity to contribute to its evolution

bullet

Ongoing support from Horsemanship Australia (Mark, Debbie and Lisa) as required

bullet

The opportunity to purchase Horsemanship Australia equipment and videos at Instructor’s wholesale prices

If you would like to know more about this program, please contact us.

Improvements to Property

To increase safety for the Young Horse Training and Starting Course (and so Debbie and students can practise their dressage tests) we are in the process of fencing a 20m x 60m area with a 1.6m (5 ½ ft) post and rail fence, and are covering the area with a sand and sawdust mixture. All earth works on the arena areas have been completed, and we are now waiting on some nice rain so that we can grow some grass.

Working Students

We have been lucky enough to have Emma Dutton from Canberra and Keith from Ireland come to stay with us as working students. They have come at a perfect time, and are a great help to us with all that is coming up. Hopefully you will get to meet these great people whilst they are with us.

Lessons

We will still be teaching private and group lessons during the Young Horse Training and Starting Course, but will be limited to teaching on weekends. Please contact us in advance to book you lessons through Lisa on 0418 699 837, or call the land line on (02) 4575 3245.

Phone troubles…apologies if we have been hard to contact. Mark has been in hospital, and Lisa and I with our mobiles have been in the very poor reception area of the Hunter Valley. Lisa’s phone has also been dropped in the water trough a few too many times and is currently being updated. Technology…..hard to live with and hard to live without!

October 2003

Exciting New Opportunity!

After many months of sorting and planning, Horsemanship Australia has formed a partnership with TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute, Richmond campus, to deliver an internationally recognised qualification in Young Horse Starting and Training. We know that you invest a lot of time and money in your horsemanship journey, with little formal recognition of the time and money you have spent, and we have been trying to address this. This course will offer the dual qualification:

Certificate III in Horse Care and Husbandry

Certificate in Young Horse Starting and Training

Young Horse Starting and Training encapsulates the very core principles of horse training and horsemanship, and many of the principles are applicable to the ongoing education and training of the horse. Whether or not you wish to pursue a profession in Young Horse Starting, this course would be a valuable stepping-stone on your horsemanship journey, with the added benefit of a formerly recognised dual qualification.

The web site for this course is due for launching on 20 October, by which time most of the bugs should be ironed out. The web address is www.younghorsetraining.com.au, and contains heaps of information about the course.

Pricing for Australian students is still to be finalised, but the good news is that the entire course (excluding accommodation if you need to live away from home to do the course) is going to be less than $5,000. This will include six weeks of “full on” hands on training (minimum 40 hours per week theory & practical) plus a whole host of on line learning subjects.

The even better news is, we are providing a special offer to our students and those on our mailing list who enrol for the first “hands on” session of this course, commencing 8th March 2004. Six weeks after the completion of the course (week commencing 31 May), you are invited to come to our property for an additional 5 days to start a young horse under supervision, at no extra cost. In these 5 days, we will be there to help should problems arise, you have further questions, or just want to know that someone is around during the process. This will be a horse that you supply, and could even be a paying client of yours.

Please check out the web site and give us a call should you have any questions about the course. This course is being advertised Australia wide and internationally, and each “hands on” session will be limited to 15 participants. If you wish to attend the first course and take up the offer of the additional 5 free days, please book early to avoid disappointment. Applications will be processed in order of receipt by TAFE NSW, and it will be out of our hands re who gets the places!
